It was in the basment of a student house in Rokeby Gardens. I can't recall the number now but i think it was number 8.
I used meditation and strobe lights to get into altered mental states and visulized the giant spider on the altar. As well as this i placed an old bisuict tin in a crawl space behind a tiny wooden door in the wall of my room. In the book was an account of an occultist who had foud some cursed tome in an old book shop in Hebbdon Bridge and summened up an inter-dementional spider god Atlach-Nacha mentioned by Clark Ashton Smith in his sory The Seven Geases. The occultist goes mad and says he is going to kill himself out on the moors. The gatway is left open in the cellar. I did this in the hope some future tennant (not David) woud read it, become alarmed and go down into the cellar and find the playpen of evil!
The party Crazy Jane mentioned was the second one were i got everyone chanting its name round the altar like that scene in the Dr Who story Planet of the Spider with Jon Pertwee were the monks chant to summon up giant psychic spiders.
The ideawas to feed the tulpa or thought form.
During the first year i was doing this there was a swarm of huge house spiders in Leeds!
I twice saw a vistion of a white spider 4 feet across, once in the alter room and once at the bottom of the stairs leading down into the cellar. It seemed flat and two dimentional. I didn't think it had any objective form outside of my mind.
Befre i left i rigged the cellar light to explode, left thealter in situ together with a whit mask covered i dead flies and walls bedecked with symbols and pages from surrealist artist Max Urnst's Seven Days of Kindness.
Years later i bumped into a guy i used to share the house with. He told me that aborn again christian had opened the little door, found he little alcove, saw the little box and read the horrid little book! He raced down to the basement and in the flash of an exploding lightbulb saw the spider god's lair.
Apparently two priests exorsized the house and the alter was burnt in the back yard. RESULT!!!!

Aye!Well don't do any more of your experiments because I've had several massive spiders to contend with recently, not white or 4ft across but big enough to cause mayhem in an all female household!

That reminds me of the near plague of large spiders in Leeds and area several years back now. I am an arachnophobe (at least of large spiders seen in houses) and they gave me the creeps then. I remember that a researcher at a university was asking for people to send spiders in for research purposes to investigate why their numbers were so high. I did not send any as those I caught in containers were rapidly thrown outside! Still gives me the shivers even now thinking about them so I hope their numbers are not on the rise again.

Gruesome Tales & Discoveries by beast

I remember the Mary Judge murder, mainly because she only lived a few streets away from us in East End Park , if it was 1968 I would only have been 10 at the time !!

Ex- detective Bob Taylor had a book out called ' Crime Buster' that featured one of the murderers mentioned earlier, the Balne Lane,Wakefield shoe fetishist. Turned out to be a guy from Cookridge.

Hi, just joined, ex Leeds (Horsforth) girl. Was spending some time searching the internet on my day off, and like most, can get side tracked into all sorts, when I came across a folklore name 'Barguest' - this sparked memory's for the past. ...

Leeds has a long and colourful history of Black Dogs or Barguests.
They were usually referred to as 'Padfoot' in Leeds though. Bob Trubshaw's excellent book 'Explore Black Dogs' relates that a man called Nichols, writing in 1828, said :-

'Leeds has it's distinct Padfoots, distinguishable one from another (as I am told), for almost every street'.

That's a lot of phantom Black Dogs for one town!
There was even a reported sighting last year, in a park somewhere in Leeds (Armley area I think).

Another name for them is 'Gytrash', used mainly around the South Pennine area. Although one was reported near Hawksworth by that name.

Cheers
Dave

I was looking through a book about Leeds recently (Leeds, A Miscellany) and it mentions something about an old folklore belief which says, "An old folklore belief in the Leeds area was that the souls of babies who had died before they were baptised would return to haunt their parents, in the shape of devil dogs known as Gabble Retchets"

Is this another name for these Black Dogs that you mention?

I'm reading a book about Wortley at the moment called "Wortley de Leeds" by William Benn published in the 1920's by the Thoresby society. In this there is mention of the "Gytrash" or "Guytrash" haunting the Wortley Manor House on Green Hill Lane. Very little remains of the manor house.

More info here - interesting reference to the novel Jane Eyre
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gytrash

Bretton Hall by Steve Jones

I worked at Bretton Hall for a year for the Sculpture Park.It is indeed supposed to be haunted by a white (not grey lady) although as stated it is hard to get any information. However Bretton Hall has other claims to fame.it has its own ballad as supposedly a former lord went missing for years and returned only to find his wife about to remarry assuming him dead.He was thought to be a tramp until his dog recognised him and his wife recognised his ring.Obviously inspired by the odysseus story ,a copy of this rare ballad used to be in Wakefield local history collection.
There is also a holy well in the park near the lake which was renovated by one of the Wentworth family.
The turning down to the Hall past Home Farm etc was supposed to be haunted by a phantom motorcyclist who crashed there, so I was informed when I worked at the Sculpture Park back in 1989.

Bretton Hall by Reginal Perrin

Sad, I'd love to know who stays at these places. I spent a bit of my childhood running around Wentworth / Northern College. I loved the idea that working class adults were bettering themselves in a house built for the priviledged. I used to have unfettered access to the whole house, servants stairways, grand halls, grounds, the lot. Great days.

Bretton Hall by Kitty84

Me again :-)

About six years ago I was a student at Bretton Hall (not technically Leeds, but owned by the university so I thought it would scrape through) which is now sadly being redeveloped into a luxury hotel and spa...

I never went on the grand tour, but did hear a few stories about the campus being haunted. Most of them fell into the Grey Lady category, but there was a particularly bizarre tale about a pack of albino demon dogs (yes, you did read that correctly) who supposedly haunted a network of tunnels beneath the sculpture park!

How much of this was influenced by a certain type of mushroom growing on campus is a matter of opinion, but I'm interested to know if anyone on these forums has anything to add? I've had a poke around on the web but there doesn't seem to be much information out there...

Kitty
