Cheers LeeRatBag, that explains it being preserved. I've seen a few now that have emerged from behind billboards, then disappeared again. There's a great Tetley huntsman at the bottom end of Woodsley Road (actually on Westfield Road) that is now covered again.

On thinking it through there are probably clauses in the leases of these buildings that allow advertising on the walls. It makes you wonder what else lies behind other billboards. I'm sure there must be some real treasures hidden away still.

Eagle eyed spotters may have seen this old 'cocoa house' beauty on the roof in Lower Briggate. (you may need good eyes here)

There was a leaflet drop advertising the Regent cinema but because the area was densley populated by back to back houses the sign was painted on the roof for the pilot to identify it.

Skeltons Butchers on Armley Town St has quite a nice old-style painted sign on the side of the building, a bit flaky but very traditional looking.

There's a genuine old one just up the road on the west side of Wortley Road, I spotted it today when being driven along Town St, but wasn't close enough to read what it says. There's remnants of a few others in the area too, I'll have to get out with the camera at some point.

If i remember correctly from my days working at burtons (about 1998ish) in harehills there was a rather nice tetleys huntsman (i think) where compton road turns into stoney rock lane, (i think it's the junction with Stanley road or lane)

Old beer signs are my favourite. Followed by the newsagents with such delights as Woodbines & Capstans advertised

We went there to get our tiles for the bathroom when we redid it. It still looks ermarkably like a cinema inside, you can even get up on the circle, and it's even more apparent from up there......

Curses!!! you're spot-on Phill.
Heres another pic. I thought it of interest as its at such a strange height relative to the street - I suppose it was put there to be seen from the main road and the becketts which are much higher. If memory serves this was originally Kirbys chip shop - before they moved to their present premises at the bottom of Stonegate Road.
Phill, where's that Kirkstall Brewery sign? I'd like to examine that - it looks like another signs been painted over it at some stage

Hi Drapsey. I can't remeber the exact street. I was up Burley. I think it's deffinately the mecca up there for old painted signs. It was off Cardigan road probably Mayvilles/Harlods there's numerous ones in the back streets.
