At the top of Scotthall Grove, on the changing rooms was a hand painted..... thing that said "Scotthall says hang the ripper". I seem to recall that it was re-painted / renewed some time in the late 80's [but I may be wrong]. Dit it, or even the building, survive? [Morbid, I know]

Lovely Thirties-style 'font' on this one. The name half obscured by the new hoarding says 'McKennells' -with the words 'dry cleaners' through the centre.
I suspect the word 'SUITS' will be found under the Nowell Avenue sign.
the rest reads:

                                                PERFECTLY
COSTUMES                             DRY CLEANED
LONGCOATS            2/3         TAILOR PRESSED

"McKENNELL PRESSED IS WELL DRESSED"

For those unfamiliar with 'old' money 2/3 means 2 shillings and 3 pence.

I noticed this today on my travels...unless it's my eyesight playing up, I can make out the words KIKSTALL and ALES.

Just seen this post by Drapesy in the archives, and it reminded me of a few others. Tetley Bittermen? "Ready when you are, Bob" (Tets mild.)
Does anyone remember the un-PC John Smiths ad where two furnace workers invite their new Asian workmate to the pub after work. Cut to pub, and the new chap downs his pint in one. One of the lads says, "Blimey! You'd think 'e were born 'ere!" The Asian guy replies, "Ah were, lad....Ah were."
They certainly don't make 'em like that anymore!!!

I remember an ad for Websters showing a group of miners ending a shift then meeting up later in the 'club'.One of them takes a shot at snooker, quaffs his pint and flames shoot out of his mouth!!! It wasn't THAT bad.

I also remember one - I think John Smiths , and I,m pretty sure it had Brian Glover on it. Anyway 3 walker's in the dales sit down to rest - one is facing towards the fells the others are facing the opposite way looking towards a nearby pub. Conversation goes along the lines of 'isnt it a magnificent sight?" "you wouldn't find this outside Yorkshire" "down south its all flat and boring" etc. eventually one says" anyroad lets get on" camera" pans out to show one walker heading to the fells whilst the others head for the pub.

I think the late, great Freddy Trueman used to advertise Websters at one time.Whether he aquired the moniker 'Firey Fred' before or after the ads.is debatable.

A newly uncovered sign is on the martial arts school building behind Mike's Carpets, only spotted it about a week ago. Quite a big one, but only a partial sign. Something about drawings. Someone go and snap it before it disappears again!

I also spotted a small one in the archway of a building towards the end of Whitehall road just before you reach the mini roundabout by Leeds central station - it's on the south side of this road, about the second building before the roundabout. Not easy to spot, not sure if it's been featured before.

I'll see if I can get these sometime, it's difficult with the dark evenings!

That Kirkstall Ales one is on the back of the Brudenell Liquor Store, isn't it? If not, that's another one.

Although this one on Harehills lane has just emerged in the last week from behind the shop sign that's been just been removed.. I was pleased to see this one again :-) Cheers :-)

Scene: two guys on an aircraft in flight;
suddenly another fella starts cleaning the window
on the OUTSIDE,by their heads!
1st Guy sez, 'Bet he drinks Carling Black Label!'
2nd guy sez, 'Naaah! he's missed a bit'

Gang of miners just off shift, go up to the bar.
Just opened their mouths to order, when another gang
of navvies push to the front. Miner sez' Oy mate!
We've just come of a double shift down t'pit an' we're
ALL fair clemmed! (thirsty).
Chief navvy sez' but we've been working Down South
all week and need some proper ale'!

Miner sez 'Be our guests lads,Thy need is greater than ours!'

I think the ad.was for Webbo's!
Arry.

This building used to be a Midland Bank on Commercial Road in the 70s.Since then it has been occupied by a succession of small printing companies, this sign is for an earlier one.

Too late JF!!! I saw this uncovered sign and made a mental note to take a pic when I got the chance - but I noticed yesterday a huge advertising board has been placed over it. Our 'window of opportunity' was only a few days!! bah!

I'm about 5 years too late with this one.It USED to say "CEGB-Private property.Trespassers will be prosecuted" or words to that effect.I'm afraid the wind and rain have taken their toll. It's one of the last surviving exhibits of the old Kirkstall Power Station-and it takes a bit of finding!

Not totally missed, I have a blurry shot from a moving car here:

Unfortunately I didn't manage anything better than this, but it's there for the record.

there are some wonderful, though rather weathered, stones set into the brickwork of the former L.I.C.S. laundry at the top of Gelderd Road.
This one proudly gives the financial returns for 1907.
