Apologies if these are on already, there's getting to be a lot of pages on this thread now to check back through to make sure it's not a duplicate!

Anyway, here's one from Sunbeam Place in Beeston. Looks like it says "Make Atkinsons Your Draper"

And another one on Woodview Road in Beeston.

Interesting spelling of Grocerie's. Wonder what the Eat, Shoots & Leaves crowd would make of that one!

Well now... could this be the very Cocoa House run by a relative of ours- one John Naylor, in 1881!!?? If so, I am delighted that you may have unearthed the site! The census just gives Hunslet Road- so maybe there were other Cocoa Houses, but I am intrigued. Just shows what signs can unearth, and how important it is to preserve them! Trudy

Tried to have look through the thread but I cant seem to see if this one has already been posted or not. If so, apologies.

On Briggate, opposite McDonalds just right of Thornton's Arcade, Cant make out what it says very well and the photo isn't the best, but if any one has any ideas.....(the sign is painted on the exposed wall above to the left of sole.)

Dont know if I or anyone else has mentioned this but there are some old Hovis signs on Harehills corner Parade. Just at the bottom of Harehills Road on Roundhay Road itself. They have been there YEARS my grandparents remember them in the 60's certainly, and some photos from Leodis show them.

Crown
There is an old sign with this on alongside the Corn Exchange. I'm guessing it used to be a Pub but can anyone confirm.
The photo can be seen at

it was The Crown and Anchor, closed during WW2, the building is still there and it is a Turkish Coffee House

I love these old signs but Its getting more and more difficult to find ones that haven't already been nabbed by Phill d or Rikj!!!
Anyway here's a nice simple one - does exactly what it says on the tin (its above a chinese now though)
I got this one too. It's near the Becketts pub Meanwood.. I haven't decided if i'm going to use it yet. It borders on interestingness. I've a load like that....

Curses!!! you're spot-on Phill.
Heres another pic. I thought it of interest as its at such a strange height relative to the street - I suppose it was put there to be seen from the main road and the becketts which are much higher. If memory serves this was originally Kirbys chip shop - before they moved to their present premises at the bottom of Stonegate Road.
Phill, where's that Kirkstall Brewery sign? I'd like to examine that - it looks like another signs been painted over it at some stage

that was my parents first Fish Shop in the late 60's early 70's

but then agen,a dartboard does come to mind on that wall!
Maybe 'Basher' threw a bit hard for double top in the Regent
next door?
going back a few more years (Lots!) I also recall the famous Toucan
advert on that wall.

What about this one? I vaguely remember there was a tannery in this area so probably that's what this refers to. It's at Whingate Junction and can be seen on building behind the wool shop

'Belt Up? Hope that's not a strong hint Carrotol! Best wait till I've posted 'A long drink of cocoa', next!

I quote this extract from 'A History of Cafes & Restaurants in Leeds',
By Donald Tate. (Published in July 198Cool;

"1888 was the year of the cocoa house.Lockharts,Leedscentral C.H.
Leeds Public CH,and Alfred Stevens, all owned more that one establishment in the City Centre. Lockhart's were, perhaps the biggest and between 1880 and the 1930's they owned seven cocoa houses, four in Briggate alone. The Leed Public C.H.Company
owned one in Lady Lane, one in Boar Lane (known later as The Golden Fleece which was later Fairburns White Horse Restaurant),
and the third in Lower Briggate known as The Golden Cup,this being situated above what is now(WAS!)Watson Cairns, and where the words 'Cocoa House' can still be seen, in paint, on the roof! "

I tried to get a pic of that one a couple of weeks ago but there was too much shadow on that roof section and the words weren't readable on printout. You need the sun behind you and to take it
from up higher. I should Co-Co!
OK Carrotol I'm 'Belting Up' now!
Cheers
