This column has been here for a few years, made of steel and has an inspection hatch similar to a street lamp. recently had a new coat of paint.

Can anyone here throw some light on it.......... Argh!!

Suspect it's a poor atempt at diguising a small mobile phone transmitter?

It could be a relay for the police 02airwave system maybe?

Not sure how long it has been in place, seems to be forever,

There are two large street cabinets nearby, and a further two cabinets with false street light nearby.

according to http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/ there's a phone mast on street lane just after the junction of devonshire av- I wonder if this is the mast in question?

I think by the look of it it's one of them mast's that they try and blend in to the surroundings? lol

and here's the other,Its been 'camouflaged' to look like a wooden telegraph pole lol

(I'm sure when I first looked at this it was a neat little hyper-link??)

Interesting you've found a sitefinder Brandy, the telcos stopped providing information to most of them a few years ago - I forget why.

I think a mobile mast is more likely, the Tetra Coms masts are not usually local low power (and they can cause a lot of problems!).

Strange isn't it - how conspicuous they are when they try to make them, inconspicuous!

The Ofcom site is correct, all the cell masts are on Street Ln.

I will investigate further, next time will take high powered field glasses and have a close look at the top.

Wouldn't that have to be on private land though, not the public footway? That doesn't look like either an NTL/Virgin or BT cabinet, more likely a mobile Co I think.

They do have similar 'stench pipes' i've seen about.
There is one on Harehills lane. It very much looks like a tram pole but you can see the vent at the top.
It's just a bit higher up from the Harehills ave crossroads, and before Potternewton park

I got a picture of the base of it on Saturday.
It has a sort of hinged door in the base. A car was parked so i couldn't get to that side.
A very poor weather pic of it is here.

A very old "stench pipe" is located on Austhorpe Rd, junction with Park Ave. It even shows up on Goggle Earth [well, its shadow does].

Someone did a post with pics about stench pipes on one of the urbex forums the other week.
I'm not sure how much non members can see of the thread though.

The post is here anyway.

This looks rather too new from the oicture to be an old stench pipe I think Phill, but that could be its disguise!

There's a picture of the one on Austhorpe Road back in another thread liitts, been there for longer than I can remember and now defunct - the inspection hatch is gone and the base full of muck.

I've looked on our maps and there's nothing for a stench pipe on Devonshire Ave. I'm not sure we even fit them anymore. An old engineer told me about the importance of knowing your hydraulic engineering when fitting them as the result can be a genuine shower of sh*te.

I don't know the area, but it looks newish from Google. Could it be a methane or radon outlet? Perhaps there is an old tip in the area and the height would suggest venting something safely. It doesn't look like a mast as under their disguises they're usually fairly standard looking.

Escaped for a while and had a look at this, it is a Mobile Coms., Mast.

Very new, perfect paintwork on smooth unpitted metal, a watertight inspection hatch a couple of feet off the ground, just a few meters away against the path edge is the cabinet as shown in the earlier picture, clearly marked as being O2 plant, From this, a small trench in the footpath angled towards the pole and running under the grass verge in that direction.

Must be honest, driving towards it, I thought we were wrong it and that it was a sewer stench pipe - very realistic.

Thanks Brunel, clearly shows what I was describing - it is very realistic as something else, isn't it?

That's right, this one is O2 not Vodafone. The Base Station info on sitefinder indicates its usage. The Emergency services (along with other private user networks use the Tetra system which operates at lower frequencies The plant to this one is hardly secure either it could be disabled in minutes!
