No this is wrong -Sloman's Soap WAS made in Leeds - I can remember as a little girl ( approx 55 years ago) going to the factory with my father ( one of the brothers in the photo who had most to do with the business) and watching it being made, pressed, stamped ,packaged etc. Who told you it was bought in? I am amazed to find this web site. Nick B - I am your mother's first cousin I think.

JB if you're Judith (née Woolf), you and my mum Josie (née Woolf) are first cousins.
What a small world.
She would like to know if you have any more recollection or information about the factory and whereabouts it was. She is trying to track down details about it.

"It appears that the Slomans never manufactured the stuff."
"No this is wrong -Sloman's Soap WAS made in Leeds - I can remember as a little girl ( approx 55 years ago) going to the factory"
My apologies for this incorrect info.
I have now been informed that the soap was made by Soloman Woolf
assisted by Fanny Sloman

I am a relative too... My grandma, Tilly Fox (nee Woolf) was Bernard Sloman's sister. I love the photos and it brings back great memories. Who else knows the Marks & Spencer story! If anyone has more photos or memories, I'd love to see them.

hi David. A bit of a family gathering going on here!
My mum says that she was speaking to your mum on the phone this morning!
And yes i've heard of the Marks and Spencer story. I think that we should be entitled to a hefty inheritance there.
i will try and find some more photos

The story goes (family, you may have a different version, so feel free to correct me) that around 125+ years ago Joseph Sloman (my GG Grandpa) was selling Sloman Soap on the outside of Leeds Market.
He was approached by another outside trader who proposed that that became partners and set up business inside the covered market hall. This business man's approach was rebuffed by Joseph Sloman and Michael Marks then asked Tom Spencer the same question!!!
The rest (as they say) is history!

Visiting dear old Mam this afternoon I mentioned the Slomans Soap come M&S stories.
She remembers Slomans Soap being sold in the market.
The guy selling it used to break pieces off and eat it to prove how pure it was.

Sloman's Soap is still available to buy, in Otley, West Yorkshire. I got some only the other week. I believe the shop is called Beauty on a Budget (or similar) and is next to the bus station.
My father is the gentleman at the front of the first picture posted by nickb - and my sister is the one 'pushing' the van! I have since found out, from another family member, that the factory where the soap was produced, in Leeds, was not, in fact owned by the brothers, but I have memories of visiting there, many years ago. The floor was always slippery and I remember being dwarfed by the big machinery, which was used to press the name onto the soap !
Dogduke - we were always told that same story. I believe the gentleman who used to eat the soap was my great-grandfather, Joseph Sloman - the whistling man. (Also, the same man who wasn't the S in the present M&S !!)

Just been to see 'Mi Mam'ee talk about days gone by. We spoke about Slomans a couple of weeks ago and lo and behold she had a new boxed bar in a drawer for me. The address for Heath and Pratt is printed on the box, details as per Sloman fans earlier post, turned 6pm when I tried the 'phone out of curiosity, still connected but of course no reply this late Seems to be worth pursuing if anyone really wants some.

Sad day today, as I heard that Geoffrey Sloman has passed away. Geoffrey was the son of my aunt and uncle, Ethel & Bernard Sloman.

To all Slomans...this is yet another branch of he family chiming in, trying to hook up with long lost relatives...I'm the great great grandaughter of Bernard Sloman via his daughter Connie (married Sam Lelyveld, next generation changed it to Langford) whose 3 kids (Joe, Dorothy and Lou) were all in the entertainment business like Bernard Sloman was before he started selling soap (and now I understand he was eating it too!). Dorothy (my great grandma)married Jack Young (originally Jungwicz, too much of a mouthful for the English so changed it to Young) and had my father, Bernard, named for his great grandpa...FYI to all of you: Bernard Sloman was not just any old bird whistler, he was known as "The Bird Man" and performed in the USA (according to a NY Times clip from 1881)as well as at the court of Edward VII, only turning to soap (love to know what his inspiration was!!) when Edward died...such a comedown!! Can't believe he then missed the M&S opportunity.... PLEASE - to any of you who have parents/grandparents who can help fill in the gaps, I am working on our (that means all of us connected to Bernard Sloman) family tree...I have a record of Bernard Sloman born 1837 married to Austro-Hungarian wife Mary, they had 4 daughters: 1) Connie (my side of the family, all clearly recorded), 2) Maud (collecting some very interesting stuff on this lady, but if any of you know anything I'd be thrilled to hear about it) 3) Bella (married a Mr Oldfield, then a Mr Posner), children Cecil. Marie, Bertie is ll I have.... and 4) Fanny, to whom many of you seem to be related: Fanny married Solomon Woolf and they had 6 children: Bernard, Natie, Tillie, Sam, Alf, and Henry...I have a record of Tillie's 2 daughters, Pauline and Anita and that both married the brothers Crystal!? Pauline married Boris Crystal and Anita mrried Barry Crystal...any more input from any of you? I look forward to hearing from any / all of you...Jacky Sivak

Hi Jacky
Good to hear from you and whilst we slightly digress from the Slomans thread, I can put you right on the final part of your family tree. My grandma, Tilly Fox and brother of Bernard Sloman (nee Woolf) had two daughters, both still living in Leeds. Pauline, married to Boris Crystal and my mum, Anita Bransby. My dad, Barry passed away a young man (46) in 1977. Boris did have a brother Cyril, you are quite right, who was married to Rae.
