The sign is highlighted on the gable wall in white. From the overhead shot it looks like the building is all one apart from the little corner 'add on' that was the chippy. The last pic was taken at the end of the yard were the buildings finish. There is another gate there. To me the stables look to have been the lower triangle section perhaps?

The front of Dysons after the chippy. This has got to be the pub don't we think? It's a pity we can't find any archive shots. There must be some.

So Dyson's were in the pub itself, as that is where the sign is. Do you mean the triangular bit directly below the sign?

I can't find any, Phill. The pub is behind the old lampost in your shot - the end building.

Well what we know is Dysons owned the property (stables) were the skulls were so we got to say they occupied the pub as well. The second picture shows Dysons to look more like a pub than the little chippy would you say? The pubs would have been quite big in the coaching days, stables e.t.c

So the pub is marked off as the actual end building then Si?

That's right. Unless the pub (and Dyson's) owned other buildings in Crown Court, the skulls must have been on that wall.

According to both maps, yeah Phill.

Ok then. The haunted Leeds book says the skulls were just behind the gate passed the chippy. I keep looking at the overhead shot and see a perfect triangle building until it dog legs in. If you look at the dog leg building you can see there has been alterations and the wall has been rendered. I've got to say I think the skulls must have been there. The wall has now gone.

right then so we have established that dysons owned the building at some point and therefore technically owned the skulls!
but does that still give them the right to move the memorial skulls??
sorry i think not!Angry

ps/unless this ion dyson bloke was actually related to one of the lads who died???

pps/the plot thickens lol Regular Smiley

Is there any way of finding out exactly which buildings Dyson's owned? Obviously, the skulls had to be on a wall owned by both the pub and Dysons. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.
Cnosni and myself are agreed that the skulls were carved earlier for some other unknown purpose and a closer look at the photos of them reveals more evidence. The block of stone out of which they are carved is a very irregular shape. If they were carved specifically for the wall, surely the block would be nice and square?

Reading the above I think I might be mistaken in exactly where I remembered seeing the skulls. Anyway I will check out the actual site soon so hopefully actually seeing it will help jog the old brain cells!!!

Ok I've just had it confirmed now. I did want to know for sure yesterday but It's very short notice. Were meeting the reporter at 1 at the Corn Exchange. Can we have some guys for a piccie and talk to the reporter if they can make it? There's me, Csnosi and Drapsey going so far. Come on guys! I'll put a message on the S.L thread too. If we can meet about 12.50 would be great.

Very, very well - we found the spot where the skulls were - the wall still exists.

here's where the wall is on Google earth circled in black - not exactly where I originally thought - but I was right in thinking it was at right angles to the main court .
The white outline shows the 'Crown and Fleece' from comparison with O.S. map posted by Si. - see below for a pic of the frontage.

A longer shot of where the skulls were. If you look at the maps Si posted at the top of page 9 you can see where th crown Court 'doglegs' round the back of the old pub and headed north to an access ginnel on Kirkgate. The skulls were on the west side of the alley - the east side has been demolished and is now a small car park.
[if you look at the 10th post on page 7 of this thread - Phill D has taken a pic along the side of this wall - at the time we didnt realise its significance]

Until I studied the maps Si posted iI wasn't aware exactly where the pub was- but know we know - it was the two shops here. Mo too , which is empty at present and Rebop.
Fine old buildings - that really belong in the lost pubs thread but I'll leave them here.
As an aside - from studying the maps its clear that these buildings comprised the Crown and Fleece. They are now two separate properties - and I can't help wondering if they weren't originally separate premises too. The 'Crown and Fleece' is an unusual pairing of names, and may well be a unique pub name (google results in nothing !)
I cant help wondering if originally they were two separate pubs that were combined into one at some stage. - the fact that the street and yard are called 'Crown Street' and 'Crown Court' - not for instance 'Crown and Fleece Court' adds to this theory. I must add though that this is pure conjecture on my part.
